Air conditioning
Can a power station run a window air conditioner?
A small one, for a few hours. An 8,000 BTU unit draws about 661 W while cooling: about 2.6 h of nonstop cooling from a 2,042 Wh station.

Wh × 0.85 ÷ watts, compressor running nonstop; cycling stretches it. * May not start a regular (non-inverter) unit: the station’s surge, or its output if no surge is listed, is below 4× the AC’s running watts, the total a generator maker plans for. Rows include each station’s own draw where the maker lists it (BLUETTI Elite 30 V2 9 W, Elite 100 V2 10 W, AC180 15 W, AC200L 12 W, Elite 200 V2 10 W, Apex 300 20 W; Anker SOLIX C2000 Gen 2 9 W).
What a window AC draws
- 5,000 BTU: 450 W on Frigidaire’s spec sheet for its FFRA051WA1 (Frigidaire).
- 8,000 BTU: 661 W, and 10,000 BTU: 826 W, on Friedrich’s sheet for its Kühl models (Friedrich).
- ENERGY STAR models draw less for the same BTU. For any unit, watts ≈ BTU ÷ its EER; ENERGY STAR lists CEER, which is close (ENERGY STAR data).
The start-up surge
A regular window AC’s compressor needs a burst of power to start. Window-AC makers don’t publish it; Polaris’s generator manual plans for a 10,000 BTU window unit at 1,200 W running plus 3,600 W extra to start (Polaris). Inverter (variable-speed) units start more gently: tests of inverter mini-split ACs for Berkeley Lab found low inrush current (Berkeley Lab report). If a station lists no surge rating, ask its maker before relying on it for an AC.
Safety: AC manuals commonly say to plug into a wall outlet and not to use an extension cord. A power station isn’t a wall outlet; check your AC’s manual first.
Making it last
- Cool one small room, and set the thermostat a few degrees higher so the compressor cycles off.
- Add solar during the day: see the solar guide.
Quick answers
How long will a 2,000 Wh power station run a window AC?
About 2.6 h for an 8,000 BTU unit drawing 661 W nonstop on the Jackery Explorer 2000 v2; longer when the compressor cycles off.
Will a power station start my window AC?
Only if its surge rating covers the compressor’s start. Makers of window units don’t publish start-up watts; a generator maker plans for about three times the running watts extra. Inverter ACs start much more gently.
